1838 Wallcoverings V&A Decorative Papers

Macaw | Vivid Yellow

This cheerful, vibrant pattern of parrots among lush foliage is expertly crafted using surface printing to recreate the look of the original block-printed wallpaper from the V&A archive. In bright yellow with rich green accents and abundant fruit. Available in 4 colours: Vivid Yellow, Olive, Blush and Teal. Archive inspiration for Macaw: Macaw wallpaper, Walter Crane (1845-1915) for Jeffrey & Co., London, 1908. Macaw, designed by Walter Crane for Jeffrey & Co., was originally created as a showpiece for the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition in London, where it won a Grand Prix. Widely regarded as the most influential children's book illustrator of his generation, Crane also created numerous memorable wallpaper designs. Trained as a wood engraver, Crane had ample opportunity to study the work of contemporaries such as painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti and illustrator Sir John Tenniel at close quarters, and his own drawings show a keen eye for stylised natural detail. Strongly influenced by William Morris, Crane was a committed socialist who passionately believed in the transformative power of bringing people from all social classes into daily contact with art.
