Step-by-step LAB Stair Coating

  1. Vacuum the staircase.
  2. Degrease the staircase with LAB Paint Cleaner. Mix 10 parts lukewarm water with 1 part paint cleaner. Apply this with a Cleaning Sponge Premium (use the green side). The cleaner is very concentrated. Use gloves and be careful not to spill on walls, objects, or floors you are not treating.
  3. After 1 hour, remove the remaining paint cleaner with clean water.
  4. After drying, sand the staircase with Sanding Sponge Orange Coarse no. 1, Sanding Sponge Yellow Medium no. 2, Sanding Sponge Green Fine no. 3 or Sanding Sponge Blue Ultra Fine no. 4, choose the right sponge depending on the condition of the staircase.
  5. Make dust-free with a slightly damp cloth.
  6. Fill damages with Presto Fast-Drying Filler 2K.
  7. Seal joints where necessary with Den Braven Hybriseal Sealant. (Use a color that most closely matches the paint color).
  8. Carefully tape off parts not to be painted with LAB Tape Purple for sensitive surfaces.
  9. Apply 1 coat of LAB Wood Primer Interior (undercoat).
  10. Check the staircase for any irregularities or imperfections (lint from a roller, hairs from a brush, thickness differences) and sand them away with Sanding Sponge Green Fine no. 3, depending on the substrate. If there are no irregularities, sanding is not necessary.
  11. Apply the 1st coat of LAB Floor Coating. Mechanically mix the coating (with a paint mixer and cordless drill). Thoroughly mix component A (large can) and component B (small can) together in the can of component A. Then pour the mixed coating into an empty can and mix well again. Never mix more than you use in one coat. After mixing, you have about 1 hour to apply the mixed coating.
  12. Wait 6 hours (this is our advice. If the room is 18-21 degrees and the staircase is dry and walkable after 4 hours, you can apply the next coat).
  13. Check the staircase for any irregularities or imperfections (lint from a roller, hairs from a brush, thickness differences) and sand them away with Sanding Sponge Blue Ultra Fine no. 4. If there are no irregularities, sanding is not necessary.
  14. Apply the 2nd coat Step 3 LAB Floor Coating, mix and apply in the same way as the first coat of LAB Floor Coating.
  15. Check if the coverage is good and apply a 3rd coat if necessary. For gray colors, coverage is generally good after 2 coats. White colors cover less well.
  16. Wait 6 hours (this is our advice. If the room is 18-21 degrees and the staircase is dry and walkable after 4 hours, you can apply the next coat).
  17. DO NOT SAND!
  18. For extra wear resistance, apply a transparent wear layer (1x) LAB Floor Coating Wear-Resistant. Mix as indicated.
  19. Wait 4 hours.
  20. LAB Tape Purple carefully remove. If the coating pulls locally with the tape, carefully cut the connection between the tape and the staircase with a sharp utility knife.

PLEASE NOTE!

  • The coating takes 1 week to fully cure. During this week, walk on socks. You can walk on the staircase 4 hours after the last applied coat.
  • Keep windows and doors closed during the application of the coating. Make sure it is not too warm during coating (not warmer than 19 degrees). Otherwise, the coating dries too quickly.
  • White colors cover significantly less well than gray tones. Depending on the applied layer thickness and color of the laminate/wood, 3-4 coats are needed for an even coverage, while gray tones are generally fully covering in 2 coats.
