Step-by-step plan LAB staircase coating
- Vacuum the staircase.
- Degrease the staircase with LAB cleaner. Mix 10 parts lukewarm water with 1 part cleaner. Apply this with a Schoonmaakspons premium (use the green side). The cleaner is very concentrated. Use gloves and be careful not to spill on walls, objects, or floors you are not treating.
- After 1 hour, remove the remaining cleaner with clean water.
- After drying, sand the staircase with Schuurspons orange coarse no. 1, Schuurspons yellow medium no. 2, Schuurspons green fine no. 3 or Schuurspons blue ultra fine no. 4, choose the right sponge depending on the condition of the staircase.
- Make dust-free with a slightly damp cloth.
- Fill damages with filler.
- Seal joints where necessary with Den Braven Hybriseal sealant. (Use a colour that most closely matches the paint colour).
- Carefully tape off parts not to be painted with LAB Tape Purple for sensitive surfaces.
- Apply 1 coat LAB wood primer interior (undercoat).
- Check the staircase for any irregularities or imperfections (lint from a roller, hairs from a brush, thickness differences) and sand away with Schuurspons green fine no. 3, depending on the substrate. If there are no irregularities, sanding is not necessary.
- Apply the 1st coat LAB floor coating 3 (rapid). Mix coating mechanically (with a paint mixer and cordless drill). Thoroughly mix the A component (large can) and the B component (small can) together in the A component can. Then pour the mixed coating into an empty can and mix well again. Never mix more than you use in one coat. After mixing, you have about 1 hour to apply the mixed coating.
- Wait 6 hours (this is our advice. If the room is 18-21 degrees and the staircase is dry and walkable after 4 hours, you can apply the next coat).
- Check the staircase for any irregularities or imperfections (lint from a roller, hairs from a brush, thickness differences) and sand away with Schuurspons blue ultra fine no. 4. If there are no irregularities, sanding is not necessary.
- Apply the 2nd coat LAB floor coating 3 (rapid), mix and apply in the same way as the first coat LAB floor coating 3 (rapid).
- Check if the coverage is good and apply a 3rd coat if necessary. For grey colours, coverage is generally good after 2 coats. White colours cover less well.
- Wait 6 hours (this is our advice. If the room is 18-21 degrees and the staircase is dry and walkable after 4 hours, you can apply the next coat).
- DO NOT SAND!
- For extra wear resistance, apply a transparent wear layer (1x) LAB floor coating extreme 4 (rapid). Mix as indicated.
- Wait 4 hours.
- LAB tape purple carefully remove. If the coating pulls locally with the tape, carefully cut the joint between the tape and the staircase with a sharp utility knife.
NOTE!
- The coating takes 1 week to fully cure. During this week, walk on socks. You can walk on the staircase 4 hours after the last applied coat.
- Keep windows and doors closed during coating application. Make sure it is not too warm during coating (not warmer than 19 degrees). Otherwise, the coating dries too quickly.
- White colours cover significantly less well than grey tones. Depending on the applied layer thickness and the colour of the laminate/wood, 3-4 coats are needed for an even, opaque result, while grey tones are generally fully covering in 2 coats.
